What is it?

A Premicell/ GSM Gateway or Fixed cellular Terminal are all names for a device which provides the ability to make and receive calls via the now more cost effective mobile networks.

It can be connected to a to a PBX Trunk Port for voice calls or simply plugged into a standard analogue telephone. Your telephone system can be configured so when a call is made out from one of your desk phones it automatically recognises that a mobile number is being dialled (all mobile numbers in the UK start with 07) and routes it through your Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal.

Who is it for?

By using a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal businesses that make a lot of calls to mobiles from their landlines will benefit from having calls deducted from their inclusive mobile minute bundles which are charged at a lower rate and calls to your own mobiles will often be free of charge, below is an example from typical UK business.

Although prices are coming down, the majority of businesses tend to spend more on calls to mobiles from their landlines than they do on any other call destination, by using a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal call charges can be drastically reduced.

Yes they are legal – Ofcom has confirmed that it is entirely legal under UK law for organisations (businesses or consumers) to purchase, install and use a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal’s for their own use which in simple terms means that the a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal can only be used by the organisation or individual who are actually making the calls.

To clarify the situation the Radio Communications Agency (Part of the DTI) began consulting all interested parties which included the mobile network operators and in July 2003 they changed the regulations to allow the use of private gateways.

Under Ofcom regulations it still remains illegal to use a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal’s to provide a wholesale communication service or telephone exchange and resell this to another person or organisation regardless of the location of the a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal’s or the amount of end users connected to each a Premicell, GSM Gateway or Fixed line Cellular terminal.
